My City 4 Ways Atlanta with Ford/ESSENCE Recap

My City 4 Ways Atlanta with Ford/ESSENCE Recap

Posted by Charlene Dunbar on

Back in September, I had the privilege of being part of the Ford/ESSENCE My City 4 Ways Atlanta event!! Being a vendor in 2016 was amazing enough and this year I got to tell my #GoFurther story on film, have a conversation with the brilliant June Ambrose and (drumroll) give a headwrap tutorial to the crowd on stage.

Here's the scoop on what I learned;

1) Be yourself - During filming, I was nervous!! When I remembered they hired me to be me, not some fictional TV personality, it got easier.

2) Every job is tryout for the next one - If I had been Boo Boo the Fool in 2016 and not done my best as a vendor...welp, I wouldn’t be writing this post.

3) Add value - I decided to pitch the onstage headwrap tutorial as a way of contributing to the event planning and they were like, “Yeah, let’s do that.” Executing the tutorial stretched me from my comfort zone of simply vending to helping to enhance the overall event experience. That gave me courage to put my ideas on the table more often and get the help to make it happen even if I haven't done it before.

Bonus: Everything’s better with a team. So many of my friends came through to help sell, set up the booth, do the tutorial, model, you name it and it simply would not have worked without them. Period.

Special thanks to Ford/ESSENCE for making us part of this great event and to everyone who came out and supported us. We are grateful!

Check out my story in the video here and let me know what you think in the comments!
